Diary Entry Import & Export
When editing the details of the current Diary, you will find options for Importing & Exporting of Diary Entries from the Diary. This feature can be used to remove older entries that may no longer be needed or that are related to a condition that is no longer a factor to your health. This feature can also be used to move a range of Diary Entries from one Diary to another if needed.
It should be noted that this process is NOT the same as a Backup & Restore of the app’s database which provides data security should the device be lost or damaged. If you are looking for disaster recovery options, please have a look at the newly integrated Backup & Restore feature using Dropbox integration, or the process using iTunes File Sharing which is documented in our FAQ section of the www.chronicpaintracker.com website.
Export Diary Entries
The Export process allows you to extract a range of Diary Entries from the current database which is then saved to a zipped file in the App’s Document directory. When you first open the Export dialogue box, you will see date pickers for the Start and End dates of the export. Use these pickers to select the range of entries to export. The dates are inclusive, so the sample shown below would export all Diary Entries from the start of Aug 8, 2012 to the end of Nov 14, 2012.
There is also an option to remove the exported entries from the diary once the operation is completed. If the switch is OFF, then the exported entries will remain in the current database, and if it is ON, then the entries will be removed from the Diary.
Once the process is complete, you can locate the exported entries in the app’s documents directory which is accessible using iTunes File Sharing. In the documents directory, you will see the zipped export files (one file is generated for each time you run the export process).
Import Diary Entries
If you wish to import a range of Diary Entries into the current Diary, you will use the Import Diary Entries option. This will open a dialogue similar to the following screen shot. The first line of the dialogue shows the currently active Diary where the entries will be imported to. This line cannot be edited. If you want to import to a different Diary, you need to exit back to the Diary selection table and choose the appropriate Diary.
You will also see a switch that defines whether or not the process will allow duplicate entries to added to the Diary. Normally you are going to want to leave this option in the OFF position. Finally, you will see the picker wheel that displays the currently available export files in the app’s Documents directory. Use the picker wheel to select the file you wish to import. Tap import and the process will begin.
